Back to Basics: Why UX Should Be About Simplicity, Not Storytelling

Back to Basics: Why UX Should Be About Simplicity, Not Storytelling

Everyone tells you, “Know your user! Create detailed personas!”

We’ve all been there - hours spent crafting intricate profiles, complete with hobbies, income brackets, favorite dog breeds, even picking the perfect stock photo for “John the Accountant.”

But then reality checks in: your precisely molded “John” could be anyone else’s “Samuel the Law Student.”

The truth is: Most of us don’t effectively use personas.
In fact, they often don’t impact our day-to-day design decisions as much as we think.

If John’s $100k salary bracket or Samuel’s canine affection doesn’t align directly with your product’s purpose, then why exhaust resources detailing their lives?

While personas can frame a broad understanding of our user base, too often, we get lost in the details - turning UX work into a creative writing exercise rather than a design solution that solves real problems.

Personas should pinpoint the core needs and motivations of our users, not serve as their biographies.

If a persona doesn’t directly influence user interaction with your product, it’s simply a well-crafted piece of fiction.

Let’s focus on what truly moves the needle:
Straightforward, impactful user research that translates into better user experiences.

Let’s spend less time on hypotheticals and more on actionable insights that drive real results. Cut through the noise.

Are we letting personas shield us from the grittier, more impactful work of UX?
